First Global Live TEST PDF Print E-mail

Dear Sangha,

We did it! Yes, there were problems.  Yes, the last minute password change caused confusion.  Yes, the video cut out.  Yes, people missed the broadcast because they did not see the password that was emailed several times. And Yes, people missed the entire broadcast because of the time difference, the password confusion, or they simply forgot what time it started. AND....

Does any of that really matter in the context of this very very very first LIVE Global Broadcast TEST?   What is truly amazing about this TEST is that we all came together from around the world at the same time to BE in Satsang together.  It is profound to think of the light, love, support, and energy flowing around the entire planet! Wow!

Some people in Australia got up at 3AM to see this broadcast!  People were online from the United Kingdom, Italy, Scotland, Australia, North Carolina and the list goes on and on.... I am are extremely grateful for your comments below and emails. Out of the hunreds of emails that I a received this one stood up for truth as a ray of light that reveals the integrity, respect, grace, love, and compassion of our beloved global community:

Davide Khalil from Scotland writes:

"The broadcast was so patchy where we are (north scotland - on 1mb broadband) - we could not hear more than a few words... out of respect, we held a long meditation to the in-and-out broadcast, but it was a priviledge to be part of the first such satsang of its sort... Seeing the video is a nice luxury, but if it were 1 frame per second, the audio tells all, and we could still hear the satsang. As it was, we could only hear a phrase here and there, with 30 second gaps and nothing that could be understood besides the priviledge of sitting with gangaji in satsang. For that infinite gratitute, please do not take the above as a complaint."

Your honest expression of your experience is very important during this testing period.  Please feel free to give us your honest feedback and any suggestions that you think might help improve the perfomance.  The initial testing that we conducted in Ashland did not have as many issues as we witnessed today.

Barb's introduction was flawless (please watch the video) and then something happened during the meditation.  Maybe there was just way too much LIGHT for the bandwidth! Ha! Ha! Barb's intro was the only video available online, for some reason after the meditaion nothing recorded via Ustream interface and I have not been able to contact anyone in Marin yet, so I do not know what issues they might have run into that could have been the source of these problems.

I am confindent that collectively we can solve these technical issues. If you have experience with any aspect of Live Video Streaming please help us with any advice you might have.

In the Deepest Gratitude...
Jill

Dear Jill,
I like to give feedback to the first live TV satsang yesterday. The quality was poor, like Davide described the first test. The breaks in the life stream were longer than the time I could watch it. A friend told the same. I don't believe, that it's my system, because other live streams work with my computer. What I've recognized was, that the quality got worse, the more people were watching the live TV.
I really would appreciate to get the opportunity of live TV satsangs in a way that work.
Thank you so much for all our work with it!
With love from Hamburg

Hello Everyone,

Yes, something went very wrong yesterday. There are three primary factors: Ustream, Hosting, the Internet Connection, and the number of simultaneous users accessing the video.

Performance was worse than the first two tests conducted here in Ashland. I have not been able to reach Rick to see what he experienced on his end. It might have been the internet connection in Marin. And I know that we need to upgrade the hosting for this website.

Ralf...as you mention, other sites are not experiencing these issues with streaming. The very good news about that is we can resolve these technical issues! Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we CAN! :)

"We were eight watching the live streaming in East Aurora NY. The streaming was hooked up from the laptop to the TV so all could enjoy. The broadcast began right on time which was exciting. The first half of the streaming was a bit rough and went off air a couple of times but the last third was great so whatever you did then do it always. The messages of the presentation were so seminal and alive at this moment and how wonderful to be in the Bay Area in my living room across the continent. I say do this more and more often."

I am wondering if you were using a MAC. Here in Ashland the quality improved significantly on a new MAC, but as Ralf point out, it should not matter. There is some other issue we have yet to sort out.

Thanks!

The five core members of the Denver video satsang group came together to participate in the live streaming. I found it great, and for us, the technical hiccups couldn't really take away the spirit and energy of the event. It added a new dimension to our meeting - knowing that we were participating in it with a lot of other people around the world, and that the meeting we were watching was happening right at this moment. This is very special.

Some technical information - maybe some of it can be useful:
We used a Windows Vista PC with a broadband connection. A couple of times the streaming went off line, in the first part of the streaming. Several times there were short stops in the stream. Most of the time the video and audio were somewhat out of sync.
The audio was surprisingly good, coming close to the satsang recordings at events and contributing very much to feeling present at this meeting.

I did a bit of research today, and it seems that ustream.tv uses the Adobe Flash Media Server for their streaming. This leads me to several assumptions:
- The only influence you can have on the quality of the streaming is to make sure that the internet connection that provides the live streaming has a good upload speed and is reliable. Also, that the computer that sends the live feed has enough power and resources (not having a lot of other applications running). It would be interesting to find out whether the upload connection had a problem when the stream went offline.
- I assume that at ustream.tv a number of streams share one of their servers, so the quality of one stream might depend on the number of concurrent streams, the overall number of users for all these streams, and how ustream manages their resources.
- Another factor certainly is the quality of the internet connection from the ustream.tv server to the viewer. It seems that the people on the east coast and we in Denver had quite a reasonable connection, while Ralf in Germany was not that lucky. This might depend on how the stream is routed to get to its destination, which is beyond your control.
- I don't think that the hosting of the gangajisangha website has any impact on the quality of the streaming, as I don't think it is involved in the actual live streaming. I actually find that the site is quite responsive for one that is powered by a content management system.

Thank you very much for all your work to make this site and the live streaming happen, and I look forward to more of it. It is such a promising direction.

Love,
Werner

Dearest Werner,

Yes! There was a tangible difference coming together live versus watching a youtube video or other video posted on the web after the fact. I felt an amazing energy, truly it was great gift to be part of this first live global test!

Thank you so so so much for checking into this for us, I was really starting to think it had something to do with hosting. We will have to see if there is anyway to get better service from ustream...perhaps a dedicated server. I am wondering if that is why the streaming was so good on Barack Obama's website.

Thanks Again, this was extremely helpful information :)

Sorry, i am not at all familiar with the site and how it works yet.
I would just like to say that i live in the South of France, and am far away, at least physically from being able to make any friends!
I would like to ask if anyone would like to be my friend?
I have a long journey, and have a very strong insite that i have almost arrived home!
I would greatly appreciate support at this time.

Thank you Amanda.
